Counteract magazine.

Counteract was formed in a South Birmingham bedroom in early 2010 by Richard Franks after the frustration of a lack of media coverage of the UK’s Second City. The aim was simple – to provide contemporary coverage of local news whilst targetting both a Midlands and a national audience at the same time. Birmingham is often overlooked in the music industry and Editor, Richard Franks, thought it was time for a change: “It’s important to recognise that Birmingham has a radiant music and culture scene, which is often thwarted by the stature of cities such as London and Manchester. “Our aim is to prove that Birmingham does actually exist and in order to do that we felt that we needed to get a publication out there showcasing National News with a Local Edge, as our slogan says. Although we are primarily online-based for the time being, plans are in place to go into print and make Counteract a free monthly publication before the end of the year with sponsorship and advertising deals already lined up.” Alongside the everyday running of the magazine, Counteract also hosts regular gigs and club nights in Birmingham to promote the magazine and showcase the best up-and-coming talent at some of the best venues in the city including bands such as Crystal Fighters, Roses Kings Castles, The Heebie Jeebies and The Book Club. Venues we’ve recently used include the newly-refurbished HMV Institute, Hare & Hounds, The Rainbow, The Bulls Head and The Flapper.
